A hands-on partner to the private foundations, nonprofits, and cultural initiatives that sustain much of culture, building, growing, and renewing them to last.
The moment
A private foundation. A collection. A cultural initiative. For each, there comes a moment when a private vision must grow into an institution in its own right, one governed to last and able to endure without the person who began it. A whole generation is reaching that moment at once, as founders hand over what they built and the ground beneath culture keeps shifting. What lasts now takes root in its own place and time, and the right vehicle for it, a foundation, a museum, a trust, or something in between, is itself a choice worth making well.
I work alongside cultural organizations of different kinds, foundations, museums, collections, and private initiatives among them, and the people who lead them, hands-on. Having built and run a cultural institution myself, I partner with them at their moments of growth and transformation, from that first question to a working institution.
The practice
I work at both ends of an institution, the big-picture strategy with its founders and leadership and the realization with the team, bringing analytical rigor and new approaches to turn a vision into a working operation that stays true to it.
I help leadership and teams keep the institution's focus on its mission, or reset it when needed, and build consistency across its positioning and its programs.
I map an institution's philanthropic landscape and build the structure and financial model that let it attract and cultivate its own patrons, drawing the full potential from its governance.
I safeguard an institution's identity and legacy, planning the succession and continuity that let it outlast its founders and pass on intact.
What I do
Most engagements are project-based, and I adapt the format to the mandate, from a single project to an ongoing partnership or interim leadership. When needed, I assemble a dedicated team of specialists and remain its single point of reference.
Turning a private vision or collection into a working institution: governance, nonprofit structure, capital projects, and launch.
Stepping in to lead or steady an institution through a critical phase, as interim director or hands-on executive support.
Designing the governance that fits: board structure and development, roles and oversight, and the trustees who carry the institution.
A clear strategy for a foundation, museum, or collection: mission, roadmap, and long-term impact.
The operating and financial backbone: operating and capital budgets, revenue and fundraising strategy, staffing, and the structures that keep an organization sound.
A clear identity, narrative, and public position for a foundation, collection, or cultural project.
Rooting a project in its community and network: access, public programs, and the relationships that earn a place.
Partnerships across institutions, universities, and communities, and with governments across borders: cultural diplomacy and soft power.
Building and caring for a collection or an artist's estate: acquisitions, appraisals, provenance, and long-term care.
Planning for continuity: leadership transition, legacy, and the safeguards that let an institution outlast its founders.
Giving a foundation's philanthropy a coherent architecture, and concentrating its impact where it can take root.
Experience
Hands-on and up close, building institutions that last and matter.
The founding moment
A couple devoted to contemporary art and architecture were reflecting on their legacy, and on the philanthropic direction of their collection. I began alongside them, inside their family office and close to the collection, and set out to interpret that vision as a museum in its own right: working with the architect, assembling a team, shaping the business model and the governance, and, over time, more than one expansion, until the campus grew to close to 40,000 square feet, with its own café, store, and research center. Along the way I became its inaugural Executive Director of both the foundation and the museum, rooting the institution in its community and forging the civic and cultural partnerships that carried its name far beyond the Hudson Valley.
Result: a private collection became an internationally recognized museum, conceived, built, and led end to end, and rooted in the community it serves.

The repositioning
The foundation carrying a major American artist's legacy needs to secure its purpose for the decades ahead. Working closely with the artist, the estate, and the executive team, I am leading the strategy to reposition it, reorder its priorities, and place its stewardship and long-term sustainability on solid ground.
Result: a foundation realigned around its mission, and equipped to carry a singular vision far into the future.

The next phase
A private art program, with its collection, was ready to move into its next chapter, as a place that would outlast the moment. Working alongside its principals, I developed the strategic plan and the plan for its legacy, mapping how a private sculpture park could take shape.
Result: a plan to turn a private vision into a lasting public place.

The operating moment
A private art foundation, preparing to open its first permanent home, needed to translate the vision of its leadership into something that could truly run. As part of the team shaping it, I contributed to the operating model and the financial scenarios, and helped define the structure and positioning that turned aspiration into a realized mission.
Result: a clear operating model, and a shared language for how the foundation would work and grow, in perpetuity and in partnership with local government.

The growth moment
A founder-led initiative putting new technology to work on cultural heritage, from the provenance of cultural property to its restitution and circulation, was ready to scale. Alongside its founder, I build the partnerships that drive its growth: academic, technological, and institutional, with a board rebuilt for the next stage and a funding strategy to match.
Result: a repositioned organization, its mission accelerated through institutional partnerships.

Who I am
I am a cultural strategist and institution-builder with more than fifteen years in the field. My consulting work spans foundations, private collections, museums, governments, and the families and offices behind them. I work across the United States, Europe, and Mexico, on strategy, partnerships, and cultural diplomacy.
I work at both ends of a project, the strategy and the realization that makes it run. I build the model each mission needs with analytical rigor, and bring new approaches and technology where they serve it. I stay close to the institutions I serve and hold the trust the work depends on: consistency, discretion, and constant communication.
